Goya Awards: Best Documentary and Best Original Song

Fernando Trueba’s film, “The Miracle of Candeal”, shot in the Candeal neighborhood of Salvador de Bahía and starring Carlinhos Brown and Bebo Valdés, won Spain’s Goya awards for Best Documentary of 2004 and Best Original Song for "Zambie Mameto", composed by Carlinhos Brown and Mateus.

The miracle of (the school of) Candeal

Looking through the eyes of 85-year-old pianist Bebo Valdes, we become familiar with the efforts of a community, led by Carlinhos Brown, to overcome weighty urban problems, not the least of which, at one time, was violence. Fernando Trueba defines his feature-length documentary as a ‘social musical’, “a peaceful western in which the ‘good guys’ defend their turf with drums instead of guns. It doesn’t resemble anything that I’ve directed before, or have even seen others direct, for that matter. With a sprinkling of Utopian charm, “The miracle of Candeal” captures the beauty, dignity and pride of the children from Candeal.
